This is a rare and forgotten and probably unknown to many fans of Napalm Death split release. A flexi 7" released back in 1990. The whole thing has to to do with the "The Catalogue" a zine that came out in early 90's (in UK?): This flexi was given for free with the September issue of 1990, i don't know how many copies were made, probably a few houndreds and there was a very limited number of hard vinyl copies.I don't know anything about the zine, i asked the zine maniac Slobby but he knows nothing too (shame on you Slobby!), so if you know anything, please drop a line, thaks :)
So, only a few lines here: This split consists of three tracks, Napalm Death contribute one track coming out of their short straight death metal era, "Malicious intent" comes from Harmony corruption lp (Earache,1990, actually Earache is the label that stands behind this flexi but it doesn't appear in Earache's official release catalog). "Malicious intent" appears also in "Grindcrusher" compilation. John Zorn contributes two tracks, "Osaka bondage" and "Shangkuan ling-feng", both tracks are experimental with a strange and aggressive touch, i dont' know where are taken from but sound interesting enought for a crustie's taste. I m totally ignorant about John Zorn and his avante-gard/noise/electronic/experimental whatever music universe, check Wikipedia for a detailed biography / discography, just to notice here Mick Harris from ND and Zorn worked together in Painkiller in 1991, Painkiller was a free jazz/grindcore trio act, Zorn and Hariss put out three albums with Bill Laswell on bass. For more John Zorn check this blog...
Thats the whole shit about this oddity, if you know anything about "The Catalogue" zine just make a comment :)
Tracks:
01:John Zorn - Osaka bondage
02:Napalm Death - Malicious intent
03:John Zorn - Shangkuan ling-feng

i thing the zine is a big commercial magazine that talks about major label stuff
i got a flexi like this for a band named mazzy star who are soft folky alternative kinda music from the 90s and were on mtv the other band on the split was also mainstream sounding indie i guess the flexi is like a sampler of hte labels featured in the zine
but all this is speculation and faded memory of wheni got the mazzy star flexi(i am a huge mazzy star fan)
big commercial magazine? in that case things are getting more weird since i found photos and a few infos about the flexi here
among other punk obscurities....
thanks anyway :)
Hehe I hang my head in deep shame (actually I'll see if I can ask around and digg around a little, will probably find some info - hold on, stay tuned)

7inchcrust once again delivers..
Nice...I bought this magazine when it came out because Napalm was on the cover and had no idea the flexi was in it until I got home. Thanks for stirring my memories, I didn't think anyone else knew about this except me and 3 of my friends!
I don't believe my eyes!!!! Is it real flexi rip??? If so this one have no price!!!! EXTREME RARE!!! THANX
The Catalogue was a short lived monthly UK glossy mag which was more Industry mag than fanzine- it featured only the big UK indie bands of the early 90's era-The Smiths etc- it never covered metal or punk.Fans could pick it up inside UK indie stores & maybe some newsstands.
Earache did make the flexi - about 2000 copies from memory- because the label was getting big on the UK Indie scene (Napalm was number 1 on the Independent sales charts) so we branched out into some promotion in this more Industry-focused mag for a change.John Zorn's experimental/grind band Naked City "torture garden" was coming out on Earache, so this flexi was pretty much a promotional item to promote the Napalm and Naked City releases.Thats why it doesnt feature in our catalog, it was never released at retail.
thanks for the comment Dig, we really appreciate it, its hard to find any infos about rarities like this.
I still have this issue with the flexi... are you interested in getting a scan of the cover ?
